Here's another example of our use of fragmentation where we obscured the image with foreground elements and negative space. When digging into the shadows like this, I’m looking at creating depth cues through separation. As a result, I wanted to create these strong silhouettes to lead the audience's eye to our characters, as well as heighten the tension and foreboding of the scene. . We used naturalistic color separation and worked with production designer @prernachawla.designs to get the right lamps, lamp shades, and red tulle to color the lights. We lit this with the range of practicals, hidden litemats, and skipped light off the backyard pool and into the curtain. It was motivated from the pool lighting but also became a terrific way to add a gentle chaos and movement to an otherwise straightforward, still frame. This is one way that lighting can punctuate moments and underpin the thematic arc of the film.
