CUCK cinematographer Nick Matthews Scene and Shot Breakdowns on @nmatthewsfilm IG

We saw this scene as a series of obscured portraits studying the details of the character within their environment. We used lighting, blocking, and composition to conceal the lead, providing partial glimpses of him. Furthermore, we used a locked off frame and negative space as a motif. . Our images explore the fragmented, immobilized, isolated emotional state of the character. By using a more observational approach it invites the audience to engage the character on an emotional level and watch a mixture of nature and nurture unfold within a range of societal, familial, psychological, and biological systems. . Throughout the shoot, I returned to this unifying metaphor of a rat caught in a hole, exposed by the sunlight. It informed the hard light pushing in through the slivers in the curtains as well as the grimy greens, blues, and yellows within the space. . See @cuckthefilm in theaters starting October 4th or Pre-order on iTunes.
